We're here to set the record straight.

I would welcome the chance to discuss any of these issues in a public forum. Steve Dickerson has refused to engage in a debate and prefers to let his corporate backers sow disinformation to distract voters from the fact that he defrauded taxpayers out of $6.5M and missed more than 150 critical votes including votes on health care for veterans and even the budget.

Steve Dickerson and his Super PAC buddies are trying to distract us from all of the votes that he's missed and the fact that he committed fraud.

Claim

I failed to pay my property taxes.

False

Unlike my opponent, we have never been sued by the federal government for $50M for Medicaid/Medicare fraud. Dickerson wrote 750 fraudulent prescriptions himself and personally profited $6.5M and got off with a settlement of $150K, a net profit of $6.35M of taxpayer money.

Like a lot of families, we have experienced some financial difficulties, but we are paid up in full accordance with all legal requirements including interest and penalties.

Claim

I support the property tax hike.

False

I have never stated support for the property tax increase, and it is not a state issue. If people are mad about the property tax increase, they have Steven Dickerson and his colleagues in the supermajority to blame. Counties all across the state are raising property taxes for basic education services because the republicans are starving local school budgets. The funding formula is completely broken. We have to fix it, but Steve won’t stand up to his caucus, or for his city.

Claim

I raised water taxes.

False

This is just a complete and total fabrication. I am proud of my record as Mayor of Oak Hill. In my four years of service I increased our reserves by $2M without ever raising any taxes. They're lying. But that's what they do when they get scared.

Claim

Twenty years ago I got charged with a DUI

True

I regret it, but it happened 20 years ago and since then I went on to earn an MBA at Vanderbilt, start my own business, marry my best friend, have two amazing children, and become a two-term mayor of my city. I refuse to be held hostage by a bad night that I had twenty years ago. It’s not like I defrauded taxpayers out of $6.5M last week, right?

Claim

False

I built a mile-long pipe from my house to Radnor Lake to dump sewage into it

This was just a ludicrous (and anonymous) smear that was levied against me when I first ran for Oak Hill City Commission in 2014. Here you can read two documents that I've requested; an email from Wade Hill of Metro Codes (and Chairman of the Oak Hill Planning Commission) stating that in the construction of my home, “the correct steps were taken to use a ‘conventional’ Private Sewage Disposal System. There is nothing to show anything different was used.” Additionally my architect, David Plummer of Centric Architecture, affirms in the attached letter that “The work progressed in accordance with industry standard construction practices. I observed no practices that I found to be outside of the industry standards for residential construction.”

I would never do anything to harm the environment, the preservation of which I view as the most important issue we face, because if we don’t have a habitable planet the rest is irrelevant. We must do everything we  can to reduce emissions, increase sustainability, and protect our natural environment.

As a Mayor I made sure that my city joined the Tennessee Environmental Council program to encourage planting more trees and to educate citizens about recycling. I've served for six years on the Metro Solid Waste Board, and fought for three years to bring a multi-modal path to my city to encourage people to walk and bike and to get cars off the roads.

Claim

I want to defund the police

False

This is a dog whistle. Affirming that Black Lives Matter isn't equivalent to advocating for disbanding the police and setting the suburbs on fire, and I hope that Steve Dickerson isn't planning to stoke racial tensions so he can hang on to his seat. As I’ve said throughout this campaign, we need law enforcement, but too much is being asked of them right now, and some resources need to be allocated to social service agencies that are better equipped to deal with challenges related to homelessness, addiction, and mental health. It's not respectful of our police force who work hard for us to expect them to handle every domestic issue in our communities. Let me re-reaffirm that Black Lives Matter, and in the State Senate, I’ll fight to end no-knock warrants, to expand community sentencing, and to decriminalize marijuana, and if Steve Dickerson would like to put down his dog whistle and engage in a debate so that voters can hear our views on criminal justice, I'd welcome the opportunity.

Claim

False

I yelled at a constituent

I wasn't yelling. It's just that sometimes when women assert themselves, people think we’re yelling. Like Metro Council meetings, Oak Hill City Commission meetings have allotted times for citizen comments. This is necessary to conduct the business of the city in a participatory, but orderly way. There was a group of citizens disrupting the business of the city by launching personal attacks at the  City Manager outside the allotted time for citizen comments. She was out of order, and if I had to do it over again I wouldn’t do anything different, and furthermore, I have a hard time imagining that if a man in a leadership role were to speak up to restore order in a meeting he was running that he would be characterized as “unhinged.”

Claim

True

I was charged with harassment

I encourage everyone to look into the details of this judgement, because when this came before the court, the judge issued a six-month restraining order against the man who brought it because he had been stalking me. I was in my early 20s, and advised by the police that the best remedy for someone being stalked was to file a telephone harassment warrant. My stalker then turned around and did the same thing to me, which is why the judge made the ruling to file a restraining order against him.
